Sarah's Story
As many of you already know, our sweet Sarah was involved in a serious car accident on Thursday night July 30th around 8:30pm. She and three of her friends were driving back from Bear Lake and were involved in a head-on collision with a drunk driver. All in the vehicle were wearing seatbelts. She and her friends were taken to various hospitals in Cache Valley and treated for their injuries.
Moving forward, this blog will serve an information center and will be updated as Sarah’s situation changes.
She was taken first to Logan Regional Hospital in critical condition. There she was stabilized and her injuries were quickly assessed. She had serious abdominal bleeding, no feeling or movement in her lower extremities, and an issue with her aorta which was causing significant blood flow issues to her limbs. After the appropriate scans were taken, the decision was made to take her by helicopter to Primary Children’s Hospital, where she could receive the best trauma care possible. She has undergone numerous surgeries targeting the trauma in her abdominal region, and much of her intestinal tract had to be removed in order to stay the bleeding. Her most life-threatening issues are being addressed first, but she does have other trauma which is more life-changing.
Her lower back is extremely damaged and that has resulted in paralysis from the waist down, which the medical team believes will be permanent. Both legs have not been receiving the blood they need to thrive, and because of that and the paralysis, the recommendation from the medical team has been to amputate both legs either at the knee, or high thigh, depending on assessment of damage once they are able to surgically explore. She has been moved to University of Utah hospital to undergo those procedures, as that facility is more well equipped in those areas of care.
In lieu of flowers please simply keep Sarah -- and the entire Frei family -- in your thoughts and prayers. There may be an opportunity in the future to donate towards Sarah’s care and long-term recovery. For those who feel so inclined, feel free to send a teddy bear to “Sarah Beara” by way of the Frei residence in Syracuse.
We want to offer our sincere thanks for all of the love and outreach already given to us as a family. We have felt your prayers and do believe we have seen and will continue to see miracles. Sarah is the best of us, and we know she will thrive because of her inspiring strength and everlasting optimism.

We love you so much Sarah! You are such a light to those around you! You are beautiful inside and out and are fiercely loved by so many! As I have prayed for you throughout this day and reached out to others to pray, it has been touching to see how much your life means to so many! So many of your friends and their parents were up all night praying for you last night. Everyone has been praying, crying and trying to come up with anything they can to show their love for you. I have truly been touched to see how much one person can mean to so many. Your life is so precious and you have and will continue to lift and touch the lives around you. You are a beautiful force for good and nothing will stop that! Love ya girl!!
ReplyDeleteYour Urban Air family loves you! Love,

Sarah was one of my 7th graders the first year I taught at legacy, Sarah and her peers hold a special place in my heart as we all survived the first year of the new CCA class together. I was fortunate to have Sarah multiple times throughout her time at Legacy, I loved having her in my classroom, she was an excellent student and just such a joy to be around. I pray she might recover quickly and that your families will be blessed with peace.
ReplyDeleteWe were at our family cabin near this wreck. We heard screeching tires and then noticed traffic was backing up. We walked to the road entrance of the cabin and saw this horrific seen. We rushed up to the car to make sure everyone was okay. I was so thankful that they were all coherent and communicating. It may seem like God may have forgotten about them during this moment and may not have heard the prayers of protection by them or their families. Just as we are seeing miracles now their were miracles at the seen. I reflected on this several times and was reminded that God is definitely in the details of our lives. God had not forgotten about them that evening. He was there through the earthly angels jumping in to assist at the seen. It was a miracle and a reminder that God is in the details of our lives. Just a few cars back in both directions from the seen was past EMTs and Medics. There we actually 4 medics in the stalled traffic that jumped out to assist them (one for each person). Another few cars back was a Ham radio operator who was able to call for assistance immediately. If she was not there it would have taken a lot longer to get the medical assistance on seen and really may have costed Sarah here upper legs. There was also an off duty officer and a special forces member in traffic that jumped into action to help them. I was amazed about all the details God had arranged at the right time for this accident. It definitely strengthened my testimony that there is a God in Heaven and He does watch over us, it may not be in the way we want or expected but he does. Our prayers go out to Sarah, her friends, and all the families affected by this accident. Please know that one bystander (I believe the special forces guy) sat and held Sarah up and made sure she didn't move her back to prevent further damage until medical personnel arrived on scene. Because of him many prayers are being answered. I am so sorry you have to go through this Sarah. God bless you all.
ReplyDeleteI was that guy. We were fortunate that one of the paramedics had a neck brace and was able to put it on her. There was also a pharmacist holding her neck up when I got there. The two of up tried to keep her upright and breathing until the paramedics arrived. It was also fortunate that there was a ham radio operator who managed to hit a repeater with a handheld radio to alert the authorities as there was no cell phone reception there. It was a terrible accident but Heavenly Father provided some tender mercies.
DeleteHey Zach and Unknown "special forces" guy. This is Trevor Hogg. I'm hoping by commenting it will alert one or both of you. I'm hoping that you can reach out to me directly at 21hogg@gmail.com. The family would love to visit more with you about this experience.
